The week in photos 20/4/2012 A giant solar flare, a hurricane-hit fun fair and a smiley seal make our weekly photo retrospective. 
1: The final frontier: Nasa's oldest space Shuttle Discovery mounted on top of a modified jet made for an awe-inspiring spectacle
as it flew past the Washington Monument and the U.S Capitol. On Thursday, the 30-year-old aircraft arrived at its new home - The National Air and Space Museum - where it will be displayed as a historic artifact.  2: Did you think this animal was real too? A mounted lion cub fascinated by a butterfly went on display in the specimen pavilion at the
National Zoological Museum of China. The museum showcases more than 5,000 species of animals that can be found in the country.  3: Workers remove a Ferris wheel that was toppled over by a tornado in southern Wichita, Kansa. Hundreds of twisters wreaked havoc across the US Midwest last weekend leaving five people dead and a trail of destruction in their wake.  4: A spectacular image of the Sun unleashing a powerful solar flare made headlines this week. Although the eruption was measured as "moderate", the sun storm captured by Nasa spacecraft revealed it to be a stunning display of magnetic plasma. The sun is currently in an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle and is expected to reach its peak activity in 2013.  5: A scantily-clad member of the Cryophil winter swimmers club doesn't look too fussed as she lies on floating ice from the spring melting on the Yenisei River in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk.  6: Yu Gao of China may have the answer to the future of aircraft safety. She has devised an emergency landing system which uses multi-layered parachutes for aeroplanes to be deployed in the event of an emergency. Her unusual idea was one of more than 700 concepts on show at the 40th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva - the world's biggest fair for gadgets.  7: It's not where you would expect to find a wild animal, but a Hertfordshire school boy had the shock of his life when he found the this cheeky fox catching a few winks in his bed. After discovering the fox, the West family shut the bedroom door and sought the help of the RSPCA who took the animal away, but not before taking a picture of the unusual encounter first.
 9: Say cheese! This amazing shot of a grey seal surrounded by a colony of king penguins was taken by photographer Sergey Kokinskiy. The Russian snapper got up close and personal with the wildlife living in Stromness, South Georgia in the South Atlantic. The winner of our Facebook caption competition, Little suggested: "I'm so embarrassed. I thought the invitation said 'come as you are' so I wore my birthday suit, but everyone else turned up in tuxedos! Where are my glasses?"  10: Choo choo: A visitor looks at an impressive miniature railway network in Berlin, Germany. The landscape covers 1,100 square meters, and contains 200,000 lights, 90,000 human figures, 5,800 meters of model train track, a model airport and has 150 trains running at any one time. It also has coloured ceiling lights that dim and change to imitate twilight, nighttime and dawn, as well as sound effects to imitate an occasional thunder storm  11: The bright lights of Russia's capital city Moscow are seen beneath the colourful rays of the aurora borealis. The image was recently captured by astronauts on board the International Space Station flying at an altitude of approximately 240 miles. Photo credit: Nasa  12: How very nice to meet you: Captain Owen Beynon Brown of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery introduces his dog 'Lord Percy' to 'Tango' the horse at Wellington Barracks in central London.  13: Historians have uncovered photos of the world's first children's slide, which was constructed 90 years ago from a plank of wood. The primitive piece of play equipment was constructed in 1922 in Wicksteed Park in Kettering, Northamptonshire - the first park of its kind in the UK. Although the kids look like they are having fun, the attraction doesn't look very slidey to us.  14: Don't eat that! Margot van Rooyen tucks into a cupcake made of insects at the University of Wageningen in The Netherlands. Scientific research has shown that insects could provide the best source of protein to meet the needs of a rising population.  15: This stunning photograph showing coral on a reef spawning at a national park in Taiwan, would make a great screensaver. Coral spawning usually takes place by the 23rd day of the third month of the lunar calendar, which fell on 13 April. 16:US President Barack Obama went back in time on the Rosa Parks bus during a fundraising event at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
African-American civil rights activist Rosa Parks made history in December 1955 after she refused to move seats for a white passenger. 17: A giant montage of the Queen made up of thousands of self-portaits of school children illuminates Buckingham Palace. More than 200,000 people - including school pupils and a clutch of celebrities - contributed to the huge montage by submitting their own self-portraits online for a project called Face Britain. The spectacular collage is set to break a world record for the most artists working on the same art installation.
